Wine Wednesday | January 22nd, 2025

This week in Pour Decisions, we’re showcasing three standout wines from Italy, Hungary, and Spain.

First, the 2019 Tommasi from Veneto, Italy—a full-bodied red with velvety tannins and rich flavors of dried cherries, cinnamon, and cocoa. It’s the perfect match for braised meats like osso buco or aged cheeses such as parmigiano reggiano.

Next, the 2020 Oremus by Tempos Vega Sicilia Furmint from Tokaj, Hungary—an elegant white with taut lemon, green apple, and mineral notes. This wine’s dry, complex character makes it ideal for pairing with seafood or creamy cheeses.

Finally, the 2022 Envinate from Tenerife, Canary Islands—a medium ruby red that bursts with red fruit, florals, and earthy herbal notes. This volcanic wine pairs beautifully with dishes like Malaysian Bak Kut Teh or Margherita Pizza.

Each bottle offers a unique taste of its region and winemaking traditions. Cheers!

Producer: Oremus by Tempos Vega Sicilia
Year: 2020
Varietal: Furmint

Nose: Stone fruits, pears, lime, lemon, and petrol.
Food pairing: Seafood (Salmon, Shrimp) and creamy aged cheeses.

What makes this wine special? It is as if dry, austere Riesling and Loire Chenin Blanc brought its White Burgundy cousin to a black tie party. Made by Tempos Vega Sicilia, this is one stunning white wine.

Selected by Seth Tan

Producer: Envinate
Year: 2022
Varietal: Blend (mainly Listan Prieto, with Listan Bianco and Tintilla)
Price: $31.99

Color: Red (medium ruby)
Location: Spain, Canary Islands, Tenerife

Tasting notes: The aroma of the minerals fills the oral cavity at the introduction, followed by a release of red florals and fruits with red petals of roselle and hibiscus, with cherry coming forth as melody. Herbal and earthy tones form the bass with notes of Chinese medicinal herbs, supporting the fruity and floral notes. Bright but not overwhelming acidity, soft and tender tannins, textured but medium-light body. The finish is equally delicate but complex, with some mineral savoriness and salinity.
Nose: An intense hit of minerals and pungency like gunpowder, flint, and crushed rocks, with some herbal hints like ginseng, Chinese medicinal herbs like danggui, followed by ripe red fruits like cherry, strawberry, red floral notes like dried roselle petals, and earthy characters like soil, petrichor.
Food pairing: Asian: Malaysian Bak Kut Teh (Herbal Pork Broth), Indian Chicken Tikka Masala | Western: Margherita Pizza, Penne all'Arrabbiata

What makes this wine special? The volcanic soil environment where this wine is produced, plus it is from a less-known wine place like the Canary Islands, made it really interesting and special. Moreover, the story behind this wine is equally cool - 4 university friends coming together to make wines that speak local and spontaneously at the same time.
