Wine Wednesday | February 5th, 2025

This week, we’re exploring three standout wines from Napa Valley, Champagne, and Chile.

A Bold Napa Blend for Cooler Months: The Arietta Quartet 2021 is a rich and structured red blend from Napa Valley, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petite Verdot. With deep flavors of blackberries, mocha, and sage, this full-bodied wine is perfect for fall and winter, especially paired with a prime rib or ribeye steak.

Aged Champagne Without the Price Tag: From the Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy, the Georges Vesselle Millesme Grand Cru Brut (2005-6) offers a rare chance to experience aged Champagne for under $100. Made by the same winemaker behind Dom Pérignon, this Pinot Noir-dominant sparkler delivers crisp green apple, honeysuckle, and a creamy, toasty finish—perfect with oysters, caviar, or even fried chicken.

A Fresh Take on an Unexpected Grape: The Vina Mayu Pedro Ximenez 2023 reimagines a grape best known for sherry into a vibrant, citrusy white wine. With zesty acidity, peach, and melon notes, it’s an excellent alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio and pairs beautifully with shellfish, goat cheese, or roast chicken.

Cheers to discovering something new! 🍷✨

Selected by Ethan Mitchell

Producer: Vina Mayu
Year: 2023
Varietal: Pedro Ximenez
Price: $19.95

Color: Pale Straw
Location: Chile, Coquimbo, Elqui Valley

Tasting notes: Crisp, refreshing palate with a medium body. Vibrant acidity with flavors of citrus zest, peach, and melon followed by a subtle minerality and hint of spice.
Nose: The nose presents a predominantly floral aroma of honeysuckle and peach blossom accompanied by notes of lemon and lime.
Food pairing: It's an excellent pair with shellfish, roast chicken, goat cheese, and mild fish like Chilean sea bass.

What makes this wine special?
I love wines that inject innovation into a classic style. We mostly know the PX grape for its role in sherry. But this bottle is an inventive substitute for a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio and is a great value. It's a testament to the variety of grape varietals.
