In this issue of Pour Decisions, we spotlight three standout wines from Italy, Napa Valley, and Spain. First, the 2005 Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino, a lush Sangiovese with flavors of blackberry, plum, and sweet tobacco, offering the elegance of aged Italian reds without the premium price. Next, the 1991 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a Napa classic from the legendary ToKalon Vineyard, balances ripe fruit, earthy aromas, and smooth tannins—a perfect pairing for a charcuterie board. Finally, the 2021 Matsu El Pícaro, a vibrant Tempranillo from Spain’s Toro region, bursts with juicy fruit and refreshing acidity, making it an easy-drinking favorite for casual occasions. Each bottle offers a unique story and a taste of its region's winemaking artistry. Cheers!

Selected by Daniel Kivel-Goldstein

Producer: Terralsole
Year: 2005
Varietal: Brunello di Montalcino, 100% Sangiovese
Price: $85

Color: Garnet with a Ruby core
Location: Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Siena

Tasting notes: Lush and fruit-forward, showcasing flavors of blackberry, plum, and sweet tobacco. It offers a round, velvety mouthfeel with well-integrated tannins.
Nose: Aromas of licorice, chocolate, and dried herbs add depth to the palate.
Food pairing: T-bone Steak, Ribeye, Porterhouse, Tomahawk, Bison.

What makes this wine special?
Having tasted hundreds of wines from Montalcino, this Brunello Riserva showcases some of the best of the region without the price tag of Biondi Santi which sells for more than 2x the price. Brunello di Montalcino showcases the beauty of an aged wine without needing a cellar of your own and provides an approachable introduction to dry reds. Sangiovese shows the weight of a California Pinot Noir with the complexity of a Bordeaux.

What makes this wine special?
Drank in 2009 at what I believe was the peak of this vintage. The server decayed it without checking with me so we literally had 40 minutes to enjoy it before it was over aerated. It was fantastic!

Selected by Jesse Drury

Producer: Matsu EL PÍCARO
Year: 2021
Varietal: Tempranillo
Price: $12.99

Color: Red
Location: Spain, Toro, Zamora
Additional tags: Biodynamic

Tasting notes: Bursting with juicy blackberries, raspberries, and plums, with hints of licorice and a touch of wild herbs. The wine is fresh and fruit-forward, with soft tannins and vibrant acidity. It’s like biting into a handful of sun-warmed berries you picked yourself, still a little dusty from the trail.
Nose: Bright aromas of fresh red and black fruits, with subtle notes of lavender, fennel, and a touch of mineral earthiness.
Food pairing: Charcuterie with hard cheeses, grilled pork, and roasted vegetables.

What makes this wine special?
El Picaro is part of the "Matsu" trilogy, where there are 3 wines representing the age of the vines, and the complexity and wisdom that comes with age. This is the youngest.

I had a tasting with their whole line-up. Their more expensive stuff was great. It was dense, and complex and beautiful, but I had been drinking heavy wines all day. Then I tried this, and its youthful fruit refreshed my palate. It's so easy to drink and is just juicy and delicious. It's a simple and straightforward delicious crushable wine.
